Seattle Sounders Make a Last Minute Win Against Chicago Fire (Part 1)
Fredy Montero found himself unmarked at the back post in extra time and headed in the winning goal to give Seattle Sounders 2-1 victory over Chicago Fire at Qwest Field on Saturday night.
Chicago Fire added a new man to their squad- Freddie Ljungberg -and went to face the Sounders in Seattle on the Xbox pitch. It quickly turned out to be a frustrating play for the home side as Sounders made a foul which gave the Fires a chance at the penalty. However, John Thorrington tried the kick but it went over.
The match benefited Montero a lot and he remained the team leader in terms of scoring goals and assists. Montero scored the second goal of the match during stoppage time breaking the one to one draw and thus giving his team the win. It was a nail biting triumph from the Sounders’ striker that made the crowd go wild. He brought a lot of sensation into the last few minutes of the game while making that final run up towards the goal.
At the start of season, this talented player had set a high benchmark for himself. In his last season in Colombia, he had set a mark of scoring at least fifteen goals which he achieved. Now for the Major league Soccer Season, he has set a twenty goal mark and feels confident that he will be able to achieve it also before the season ends. He also has a mark for minimum number of assists and that stands at ten assists.
Montero is currently at ten goals and ten assists. The Seattle Sounders’ coach Sigi Schmid commented on the matter by saying that Montero is a player that scores when he is most comfortable in the game. Another controversy regarding the match was- Ljungberg- who was recently transferred to the Sounders by Fire. It didn’t seem clear if the player could play well enough against his former home ground so soon. But still he emerged as his new team’s corner kicker.
