Seattle Storm 47 vs. Connecticut Sun 40 - WNBA Game Halftime Analysis
Sue Bird topped all scorers with 13 points as Seattle Storm led the Connecticut Sun 47-40 at halftime on Friday night at Key Arena. Guard Tanisha Wright added 11 points while forward Lecoe Willingham came off the bench with eight
points for Storm, who are on a six-game home winning streak.
Renee Montgomery led Connecticut with 12 points. Kelsey Griffin added eight points while Tina Charles contributed six points for Sun, who have won six of seven overall and three in a row on the road.
First Quarter
Seattle opened the first quarter on a 4-0 run but Montgomery responded with a jumper to cut their lead to two. Bird then knocked down two consecutive shots from down town to stretch Seattle’s lead to eight points, 10-2.
Connecticut bounced back though as forward Asjha Jones canned a jumper and then followed it with a layup to trim the deficit to four, 10-6 midway through the opening period. Storm however were in their groove and in the next four
minutes, they pushed their lead to 19-10.
With 01:11 to go, Connecticut trailed Storm by 21-14. However Willingham hit a brilliant three-pointer with two ticks to go in the quarter to give Seattle a ten-point advantage, 24-14.
Second Quarter
Seattle widened their lead to 15 points, 33-18, early in the second quarter. Griffin’s 3-pointer on the next possession put it down to 12 points, 33-21 but Wright hit a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 14.
Storm continued to dominate in the passage that followed and midway through the second quarter, Smith and Bird hit two consecutive three-pointers to stretch Seattle’s lead to 18 points, 43-25. Sun however scored the next seven
points of the quarter to bring the deficit down in single figures and made it an eight-point contest at 35-43. Storm responded with four unanswered points and raced to a 12-point lead, 47-35, with 39 seconds to go in the interval.
The tipsy turvy trend however continued in the very last seconds of the quarter as Montgomery hit a three-pointer and Charles followed her with a jumper to show Sun, only seven down at halftime, 47-40.
