Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Sparks win - WNBA Roundup July 12, 2011
On Tuesday, two games took place in Women National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here are the highlights of the two games:
Seattle Storm 79 - Washington Mystics 71
Sue Bird scored 22 points as the Seattle Storm won their second straight game of the season with a 79-71 victory over the Washington Wizards at Key Arena.
The veteran guard also dished out three assists and ended with 8 for 14 shooting from the field including 2 for 4 from three-point range, and 4 for 5 from free throw line. Swin Cash contributed 20 points, six rebounds, four steals
and three assists while Camille Little had 12 points, four rebounds and three steals in the victory.
Marissa Coleman led the Mystics with 19 points and nine rebounds. Matee Ajavon added 13 points, seven assists and three steals while Crystal Langhorne scored 10 points for Washington, who lost their third straight game.
Bird scored 15 of her points in the first half of the game as Seattle held a 43-37 lead at halftime. Storm maintained the momentum early in the third quarter and stretched their lead to as many as 12 points at 54-42. Washington
however outplayed Seattle 15-7 in the last four minutes of the third, cutting the deficit to four (61-57).
Washington continued their surge and Coleman’s three-pointer with 06:58 left on the clock, trimmed the Seattle’s lead to two, 66-64. However, Storm bounced back with seven answered points to go ahead by 73-64 and were never threatened
again.
Los Angeles Sparks 84 - San Antonio Silver Stars 74
Playing at the At AT&T Center, Ticha Penicheiro came off the bench with a team-high 18 points as Los Angeles Sparks finally halted their five-game losing streak with an 84-74 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars.
It was the first game as in charge for Joe Bryant, Kobe Bryant’s father. Natasha Lacy added 13 points, four rebounds and three steals while Ebony Hoffman and Jantel Lavender added 12 points apiece for Los Angeles, who played their
fourth straight game without their leading scorer Candace Parker.
Sophia Young led the Silver Stars with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. Danielle Adams had 16 points and eight rebounds while Jia Perkins added 14 points and two steals in San Antonio’s third consecutive defeat.
Silver Stars opened the game with five consecutive points and went on a 10-2 run in the last four minutes of the first quarter to take a 23-15 lead into the second frame.
Los Angeles however bounced back and outscored San Antonio 28-18 in the second quarter, converting their eight-point first period deficit into a two-point lead, 43-41, at halftime. Los Angeles widened the lead to 65-57 at the end
of the third quarter and maintained their hold on the hosts during the entire fourth quarter.
