Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Sparks win: WNBA Roundup June 21, 2011 – Part 3
Seven Tulsa Shock players scored in the first quarter of the game as they went on a late 11-8 run and carried a 20-13 lead into the second.
Shock scored seven unanswered points in the first two minutes of the second quarter and pushed their lead to 27-13. However, Seattle Storm responded quickly and cut the margin to eight, 29-21 with 05:05 remaining in the first half.
The game flowed in the same vein in the ensuing passage and Liz Cambage’s lay-up in the closing second of the frame made it 37-29 for Tulsa. Swin Cash however hit a pair of free throw to make it six-point contest, 37-31, at intermission.
Storm limited the visiting team to 13 points in the third quarter and surged with a 30 point blitz to snatch a 61-50 lead, heading into the fourth. Shock launched a fight back in the fourth quarter and with the game entering its
last minute, they closed within three on a pair of free throws by Jackson. Storm however kept their nerves in the clutch and followed with three consecutive shots to seal their third win of the season.
Los Angeles Sparks 96- New York Liberty 91
On Tuesday night, DeLisha Milton-Jones notched up 27 brilliant points and clutched six rebounds as the Los Angeles Sparks beat the New York Liberty 96-91 at Staples Center.
Milton-Jones recorded 9 for 14 shooting from the field, 3 for 4 from downtown, and a perfect 6 for 6 from free throw line. Candace Parker reached another double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds while Tina Thompson racked up
14 points in Sparks’ third consecutive victory.
Cappie Pondexter added 22 points, six assists, and two steals to lead the Liberty. Plenette Pierson posted 15 points and four rebounds while Kia Vaughn had 14 points and 12 rebounds but it was not enough to save New York from their
fourth straight loss. Essence Carson also came off the bench with 13 points and six rebounds for Liberty.
Vaughn’s pair of free throw late in the first quarter gave New York a 25-21 lead. However, Milton-Jones hit a three-pointer and Toliver had two lay-ups in the last two minutes of the first period to put Los Angeles ahead by 28-25.
Liberty launched a 7-4 spurt capped by Spencer’s jumper early in the second quarter and tied the game at 32.  Both teams then played a close game, but Pondexter hit a three-pointer deep into the half to make it 53-50 New York’s
favour. Parker reacted quickly and nailed a 3-pointer for Los Angeles, tying the game at 53 at the end of first half.
After halftime, New York went cold on the offensive as Los Angeles snatched a 76-71 lead going into the final period. Liberty’s bench tried to spark a comeback in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter and cut the difference
to just one, however, Sparks quickly turned things around with a 4-0 run in the last 29 seconds to win the game.
