Seattle Storm and New York Liberty win – WNBA Roundup August 23, 2011 - Part 2
Seattle Storm 63 - San Antonio Silver Stars 55
On Tuesday night, Tanisha Wright scored six of her game high 16 points in the fourth quarter as Seattle Storm defeated San Antonio Silver Stars 63-55 at Key Arena, stretching San Antonio’s losing streak to four games. It was second
consecutive win for Seattle.
Lauren Jackson had 13 points, including six of them in the fourth, seven rebounds and two blocks. Sue Bird added 12 points, five assists and four rebounds for Storm, who are third in the Western Conference with a 15-12 record.
Camille Little also scored 12 points in the victory.
Sophia Young topped the Silver Stars with 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals while Jia Perkins came off the bench with 11 points and six rebounds.
Seattle shot 43.6 percent (24 for 55) from the field and 92.9 (13 for 14) from free throw line. San Antonio shot just 32.4 percent (24 for 74) from the floor and 83.3 (5 for 6) from the line. Storm committed 11 turnovers as compared
to seven by the Silver Stars.
Seattle got off to a good start and held the visiting team to nine points in the first quarter, taking a 16-9 lead into the second. Silver Stars outscored Storm 19-10 in the second quarter and held a 28-26 at halftime.
Seattle scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to take a 47-42 lead and did not trail for rest of the period.
New York Liberty 74 – Phoenix Mercury 70
Cappie Pondexter had 25 points, including 17 of them in the last quarter, eight rebounds and three steals as New York Liberty beat Phoenix Mercury 74-70 at US Airways Center. The victory snapped Mercury’s two-game winning streak.
Nicole Powell added 16 points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists while Plenette Pierson totalled 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in the victory. Kia Vaughn also scored 10 points and pulled down
five rebounds for Liberty.
Candice Dupree scored a team high 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the losing effort. Penny Taylor contributed 14 points, nine rebounds, four steals and four assists while Alexis Gray-Lawson came off the bench with 11
points and six rebounds.
New York hit 40.0 percent (28 for 70) from the field and limited Phoenix to only 38.8 percent (26 for 67). Phoenix committed 19 turnovers while the visiting team committed just 13.
Liberty outscored Mercury 18-8 in the first quarter and carried a ten-point lead into the second. However, Phoenix limited them to 12 points in the second period and carried a 31-30 advantage into the locker room. Mercury stretched
their lead to 52-49 at the end of the third quarter.
In a close fourth quarter, Phoenix held a 67-63 lead with 04:23 remaining before New York went on a 10-0 run and went ahead by 73-67 for good. Mercury then scored three answered points to make it a three-point contest, 73-70, but
Pondexter hit a free throw to seal the victory.
