Seattle Storm break Minnesota Lynx’s winning streak with win at home – WNBA Recap
The Seattle Storm finally handed the Minnesota Lynx their first defeat of the season with a 65-62 victory at the Key Arena on Sunday night. The loss broke a sequence of 10 wins for the Lynx to open the regular season, and was the
first of the season for the defending champions.
Sue Bird finished with 21 points and 4 assists, going 8 of 15 from the field including an amazing 5 of 7 from beyond the arc. Maya Moore had 14 points for the Lynx.
“I thought Seattle played really hard and was far more determined than we were to win the game. We didn't show up until the second half and that was a bit disappointing,” said Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve.
Seattle led 16-10 at the end of a low scoring first period. Ewelina Kobryn had 4 free throw attempts in the final 2 minutes of the period and connected on three of those to give Seattle the lead.
Minnesota looked out of rhythm in the first period, especially near the end where they missed five field goal attempts to close the quarter and did not score in the final 3 minutes.
Seattle came out charged in the second period, and opened the quarter with a 16-5 run to take a 32-15 lead with 5:04 remaining in the first half. Minnesota continued their dismal shooting from the end of the 1st period
into the 2nd when they went 2-of-6 to start.
Seattle led 43-29 at halftime after having outscored the Lynx 27-19 in the 2nd period.
Minnesota came out charged in the third period but could not stop Seattle’s offense from scoring. Minnesota scored 15 points in the third period while Seattle had 14 and led the Lynx 57-44 going into the final period.
After leading for most of the game, Seattle looked like they would easily go on to take the victory. However, Minnesota stepped their game up in the final period to stage a comeback.
The Lynx scored the first 8 points of the 4th quarter to pull with five of the Storm as Seattle were unable to put any points on the board for the first 4 minutes of the period. They had two turnovers to start and then
missed 3 field goal attempts after that. Their first points for the quarter came off a free throw by Tina Thompson at the 5:44 mark, after which Minnesota again went on a 5-0 run to trail the Storm 57-58.
However, a three pointer by Katie Smith followed by a layup by Camille Little saved the day for Seattle as they took a decisive 63-57 lead with 2:19 left in the game. Moore scored a three and then followed it with two free throws
in succession to have the Lynx back within 1 of Seattle, but could not score after that as Seattle went on to win 65-62.
Tanisha Wright finished with 12 points and 8 assists, going 5 of 11 from the field. Tina Thompson had 10 points and 5 rebounds coming off the bench, and went 1 of 5 from the distance. Maya Moore was the leading scorer for Minnesota
with 14 points. Rebekkah Brunson finished with 7 points and 11 rebounds and Seimone Augustus had 12 points and 6 rebounds.
