Seattle Storm win fifth straight; Beat Washington Mystics 79-71 - WNBA Recap
On Tuesday Night the game between Seattle Storm and Washington Mystics took on each other at the Verizon centre and led by Sue Bird’s 25 points Seattle edged out Washington, 79-71.
Seattle hit some snags early in the season but now they are on a 5 game winning streak. They were having a 6 points lead at the end of opening half but in the 3rd frame, Mystics tied the game at 36. A 13-5 run deep into
the third quarter however salvaged Strom’s lead and they were never really bothered after that.
Centre Ann Wauters tallied 14 points and had 7 boards for Storm, while guard Tanisha Wright and reserve Ewelina Kobryn recorded 9 points each in Seattle’s 6th victory of this season.
Storm has improved phenomenally over a short span of time, they lost 7 of 8 games at the start of the season but now they are simply unstoppable. Storm coach Brian Agler was all praise for his squad. He laid emphasis after the
win, that they must have to bag more road wins.
“Our team has gotten better over the last three weeks,'' Storm coach Brian Agler said. ``We better get some road wins because we have so many of them over the first half of the season.''
On the other had despite having three players scoring in double figures, Washington rolled down to a 4 game losing streak. They were marshalled by forward Crystal Langhorne as she recorded a double-double, 20 points and 10 boards.
Reserves Monique Currie and Natasha Lacy scored 15 and 11 points respectively in Mystics’ 9th loss of WNBA’s 16th season.
Mystics Coach Trudi Lacey was not happy with his team’s performance, especially after ending a winless road trip and losing 4 straight games at home.
`We didn't start off well,'' Mystics Coach said. ``Anytime a team scores 30 points off the free throw line, that's tough.''
Storm opened the game with a 7-2 burst and Washington could only reduce the gap down to 7-5 before Storm embarked on another 10-5 run, capping off the 1st frame with a 17-10 lead.
Seattle opened the second stanza with a 12-5 spurt and widened the gap to 29-15. The hosts rebutted with a huge 11-3 run and reduced the deficit down to 32-26 at the end of 1st half.
The Mystics kept on mounting pressure in the third and with 4:35 in hand; the scores were tied at 42 apiece. What followed was 13-5 Storm spurt, and the game entered into its last 10 minutes with Seattle having a 55-47 lead.
The 8 points lead cushioned Storm throughout the decisive frame and with 2:58 to expire, they were still leading by 66-59. Seattle eventually won it by 79-71.
