Sebastian Rieschick overpowers Samuel Groth in the second round – Caloundra International 2012 CH
Eighth seed, Sebastian Rieschick, rallied past the local star, Samuel Groth, in three sets at the Caloundra International 2012 on Thursday. He penned down a 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2 victory over the world number 499 to book a place in the final eight at this ATP
(Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place from February 4th to February 12th.
The German rising star required three sets at the Caloundra Tennis Club to outmuscle Groth in their third meeting. He not only avenged his loss at the Australia F13 two years ago but also advanced into the quarter-finals at this hard court tournament. Rieschick
lost his track in the second set but dominated in the first and the last set to earn the spotlight.
Ranked 256th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Rieschick made quick in-roads and went 3-0 up with two breaks of serve. Apart from losing his serve in the following game, he unleashed his skills again and wiped out the final
three games. The German blocked three out of four breakpoints he came across and cashed in four out of eleven break chances to register an exceptional 6-1 score line.
The Frustrated Aussie found his way back in the match and earned the desiderated break in the opening game of the second set, subsequently going 2-0 up. Despite levelling the scores at 4-4, Groth prevailed in the tie-breaker and ultimately clicked the match
with a 7-6(5) win.
In the final set, the person who dominated was the eighth seed. The German re-gathered his energy and got the critical break in the third game. He held his composure in the remaining match and after capitalising on another break opportunity in the seventh
game, he pocketed the decider with a 6-2 success.
Next in line for the eighth seed is the second seeded local challenger, Marinko Matosevic, who pounced over the Canadian competitor, Erik Chvojka, in straight sets to set-up this match. Matosevic saved seven out of nine breakpoints he faced and capitalised
on five out of fourteen break chances, eventually ending the match with a 6-4, 6-2 success.
