Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber blame poor strategy for Hungarian GP woes – Formula 1 news
Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber admit that the team suffered at the Hungarian Grand Prix due to wrong tyre strategy.
Red Bull were hampered their chances when they did not use the right tyre strategy suitable for the Hungaroring circuit. Vettel finished fourth in the race while his teammate Webber only managed eighth position.
The team was able to gather enough points to stay at the top of the Constructors table but it meant that both its drivers were not able to gain the points they could have from the race especially when both the drivers are in contention for the title.
“I think fourth is probably not the result we could have had today,” Vettel said. “The speed was a little bit better than that, but I was stuck behind Jenson, who was quite slow. There we lost quite a lot of time, but you can’t just pit and come out in clean
air. Other people weren’t that much slower either, so not much we could have done.”
“My tyres were not too bad at the end but we thought we’d try something. It could have been the case that the tyres would fall off the cliff but they didn’t,” added the world champion.
Webber only managed to go as high as fifth after he started the race from the 11th position. Webber also made a pit stop at the final stages of the race hoping that other teams tyres will start to wear out quicker and he will be able to go past them and
finish on a high but like in Vettel’s case he was not able to do so as overtaking at Hungaroring was a difficult ordeal.
Webber admitted that the strategy did not work he said that he lost three places through trying something different. Even though he was quicker than other cars on the grid during the race yet he was not able to get the job done.
Now teams go for a much needed summer break, and before the season restarts Red Bull will have to gather and look for a suitable strategy to go with at Spa, it will be interesting to see how they plan the Belgian Grand Prix.
