Sebastian Vettel's contract with Red Bull renewed till 2014 - Formula 1
Last year’s World Champion, Sebastian Vettel has extended his contract with Red Bull which will keep the driver with the team until the end of 2014. Red Bull are very keen to keep the 23-year-old World Champion in the team as they are happy with the young
German’s performance.
Vettel, along with Webber has topped the timings in Barcelona pre-season tests; four times out of eight. Christian Horner, the team boss, has declared that Vettel shares a great chemistry with the team. He said that both the team and Vettel himself are comfortable
with each other.
The team boss further stated that they were discussing a contract extension since the start of the year, however, it was a quick decision owing to the fact that many teams were willing to sign the driver as soon as the season ended and he would rather Vettel
went racing without any such distraction. Speculation had it that both Mercedes and Ferrari seemed interested to sign the German racer.
"It's good to have it done and tidied up prior to the beginning of the season - rumours had already started about other teams," Horner said. "We were keen to take away that distraction and concentrate on the racing…He's been with Red Bull since 1998, so
it was a logical thing to do."
Vettel's Australian teammate, Mark Webber, whose contract is to expire at the end of the 2011 season says that he has not thought about his future endeavors yet.
Signing Vettel for such a long period is clear enough to indicate that Red Bull are whole heartedly focused on the young driver. This is unlikely to attract any other top driver to sign the team. Horner said that the contract is solid until the end of 2014
with no break clauses or options.
Both Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton will have their contracts with Ferrari and McLaren end at the end of 2012 but Red Bull are not looking forward to sign anyone of them.
Horner said, "He's so young so it makes sense to secure him for a sensible period of time. Fernando and Lewis are both tied up for the long term and we're happy with what we've got."
Vettel was unavailable for comment and was not quoted in the announcement by Red Bull aswell.
