Sebastian Vettel: I am out-and-out favourite for the 2012 championship – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver, Sebastian Vettel believes that he is out-and-out favourite for the championship title after his back-to-back victories in the last couple of seasons.
Vettel will hunt for his third consecutive title in the forthcoming season going to be started at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia on March 18, 2012.
After dominating performance during the last season with 11 wins out of 19 Grands Prix and 15 pole positions, Vettel expressed that it was quite reasonable for him to be deemed as favourite regardless of the efforts made by the contenders for reducing the
gaps.
Moreover, the 24-year-old German driver believed that a driver who had won in last season would definitely be called amongst the favourites in the later season.
“Generally, the one who wins it the year before is usually among the favourites the next season,” said Vettel.
However, Vettel also notified that it would be very hard to dominate in the forthcoming season like the last year because the team had yet to make improvements in many concerning areas.
Furthermore, Vettel could not be able to complete more than 23 laps during last day of the final test at Barcelona while setting his best time of 1 minute 23.608 seconds and came last on the timesheet.
The defending champion said that the team had evolved incredibly well from 2009 to 2011. Moreover, he said that they did not have a better car during 2011 as compared to 2010 but during the last year, they performed stronger as a team.
However, he said that there had been couple of instances where they had made some mistakes during the pre-season tests.
“There were a couple of occasions where we made mistakes. Fridays have been poor. I made mistakes. I crashed the car. We got the concentration back when it mattered but on Fridays you only have a couple of hours to prepare the car - so we can improve on
that. We had a meeting in January and went over the things that we need to do better and you would be surprised. It was a long list. There were lots of points to improve,” said Vettel.
