Sebastian Vettel: Pirelli decisive, Drag Reduction System dangerous for Monaco – Formula 1 news
Reigning Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing has spoken in favour of Pirelli tyres and against the Drag Reduction System for the upcoming 2011 Monaco Grand Prix.
Vettel stated that the Monaco Grand Prix, with its squeezed layout, is not famous for overtaking but the fast degrading Pirelli tyres are set to change history.
The defending world champion is well on course to successfully defend his title but feared that the use of the modern Formula 1 tools of overtaking like the DRS will induce more danger in the race, especially in Monaco.
“With regard to the DRS, to be honest I'm not such a fan of using it in practice and qualifying due to the extra risk. You want to go as fast as you can, but using the rear wing in Monaco could be dangerous in some places,” commented Vettel.
He added that overtaking in Monaco will be due to the Pirelli tyres more than the DRS.
Talking about the Pirelli tyres, the German said, “Traditionally in Monaco overtaking has been very difficult, but it could be possible this year, mainly because of the tyres. As we've seen in the races so far there has been a big difference.”
Pirelli have already done fair bit of damage to the history of overtaking. In Spain, where total overtaking moves were 10 in the 2010 season, Pirelli induced more than enough overtaking to make the Formula 1 teams and fans happy.
For the Monaco Grand Prix, the use of DRS is banned in and around the tunnel which is a good move regarding the safety of the drivers.
Vettel enjoyed a second place on the podium in the 2010 season and will look to do at least the same, if he cannot manage a win.
So far, Vettel has been able to stay on the podium on all the five races of the 2011 season with four wins and one second place finish.
The Monaco Grand Prix is the first street circuit on the 2011 calendar and it will be interesting to see how things turn out for the German.
