The youngest-ever Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel has won the German sportsman of the year award.
Vettel was far ahead of the other contenders. He claimed 4,288 points to be the number one choice for the award. Vettel became only the second German driver to win the Formula 1 title. Other than Vettel, only Michael Schumacher won the title.
Apart from Vettel, the other two sportsmen in the nominations for the award were tennis star Timo Boll and the winner of the US PGA Championship Martin Kaymer. The tennis star Boll grabbed 2,088 points and was second whereas the golfer Martin was third by
scoring 1,763 points.
In 2009, the German swimmer Paul Biedermann won this award. He had won two world titles in swimming. The sportswoman of the year went to Maria Riesch. The Olympian Maria had won two Olympic alpine skiing titles in Vancouver this year. In 2009, the same award
was given to the 2009 world javelin champion Steffi Nerius.
The individual awards were tough to decide but the team award went to the German football team which did a great job at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Although the German team lost in the semi-final stage but they were the top goal scorers in the tournament.
Sebastian Vettel has achieved so many positive results this year. At his age, Michael Schumacher did not even win a single race. However, Schumacher went onto win seven world titles and statistically is the most successful driver in any form of motor sports.
Vettel has the talent to follow the foot steps of Schumacher and add many other Formula 1 titles to his name.
Vettel has been named baby Schumacher but he wants to make his own name in the sport. Vettel names his cars and he has been doing this right from the beginning of his career.
For Vettel, this is just the beginning and he has a long way to go. He definitely has the potential to put his name right amongst the top sportsman of the world just like his favourite Michael Schumacher.
