Sebastian Vettel admits he was more worried about tyres than winning the Belgian GP – Formula 1
The reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel has admitted that he was more worried about the tyre issues the RB7 was going through rather than winning the Belgian Grand Prix.
“We had a lot of concerns going in to the race after the damage we had on the tyres from qualifying. So we weren't quite sure and actually we took quite a lot of risk. We had reason to be confident that it should be fine but you never really know, and there
was nobody walking up and down in the paddock giving you a guarantee,” he said.
The team revealed recently that they considered starting from the pit-lane despite the fact that Vettel was on pole in order to make some changes to the car as the team felt that it was not ‘safe’ for their drivers to drive under such conditions.
However, the Pirelli engineers also decided to help the team out in this matter and after evaluating all the data and asking their drivers, Red Bull finally decided to start the race as they had planned and it turned out to be the best decision for them
as they secured a 1-2 at this past weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.
“We were not thinking too much about the outcome but surprisingly the pace was very good in the race, I was feeling very comfortable in the car and without too much effort in the beginning I was able to keep up with the guys and get back in to the lead,”
said the reigning world champion.
After this spectacular result, McLaren and Ferrari are now way behind in both constructors’ and drivers’ standings and now RBR can take a sigh of relief as the championship is now in their hands completely.
The only way RBR will not be able to secure the titles this year is that if they do not finish more than two races.
Otherwise, Vettel will be able to retain his championship successfully and RBR will finish on top of the constructors’ standings as well since they will score good points if they finish races in the remainder of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
