“Sebastian Vettel can be compared with the legends” – Sir Jackie Stewart
The legendary 3-time world champion Sir Jackie Stewart recently stated that the 2011 Formula 1 grid is the best grid ever in the history of the sport. With drivers like Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button, Mark Webber, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and
Fernando Alonso ready to reign the tracks, the 2011 Formula 1 season is going to be even more exhilarating than the 2010 Formula 1 season was.
Since the use of KERS would be plausible in the upcoming season, it would be interesting to see how the teams manage to find dominating pace. It is anticipated that Team Mercedes is going to be back on the top with front running cars once again.
However, according to Stewart, the best part about 2011 Formula 1 season is going to be the fact that the youngest champion in the history of the sport, Sebastian Vettel, is going to defend his title against these 5 giants and it would be interesting to
see how he manages to keep his cool.
Sir Jackie believes that Sebastian Vettel can be compared to the legends and he has the ability and “spark” to perform as good as them.
“Absolutely, I think the animal is exactly the same. I don't think Sebastian Vettel is any different from what Jim Clark was, or Graham Hill was, or Jack Brabham was, or people who have won the world championship more than once,” he said.
One can disagree with that to some extent as this was Sebastian Vettel’s first title and even though he won the title fair and square, one cannot rule out the “foolish mistakes” he made throughout the season. If he wants to retain his title in 2011 he would
have to retain his poise and come up with winning strategies in every race.
“So they are not different as individuals, but we have a crop of them just now and we have got a little closer unification of the quality of the performance of the cars, so it is going to give us better racing - and I see 2010 was as good as the late 1960s/early
1970s,” said Jackie.
2010 was a great year for Formula 1 as it gained a lot of viewership because of the drama and excitement. Sebastian Vettel has the spark and ability to win even more titles but in order to earn the right to be compared to the legends that raced the fans’
hearts out for decades is not just in anyway.
Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see how the teams plan 2011 as each squad will have more rivals than any team has ever had in the history of the sport.
