Sebastian Vettel claims he could have done better – Formula 1 news
Sebastian Vettel has claimed that he did not push hard during his final flying lap, which cost him pole position in the Hungarian GP.
The Red Bull driver was looking extremely strong right from the start of the weekend, as he topped both the practice sessions on Friday. Although his rivals were not far behind, he seemed to have an edge over them because of being quick in all of the sectors.
Moreover, the high track temperatures also suited him, so he was the favourite to claim pole.
Above that, the German champion had an advantage over his rivals, as he did not use all of his soft tyres and had an extra set available. This meant that he could go for a couple of quick laps whereas all of the others had only one chance to match him.
At the start, all of the drivers came out on a used set of tyres and tried to push as hard as they possibly could. However, their lap times were no match for Vettel’s, who was clearly ahead. It seemed that his first flying lap in Q3 would be enough to give
him pole position for the race, but that was not the case.
Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes came out with an amazing lap, which even surprised him in the end. He was on provisional pole and waited for Vettel to complete his final run. The latter of the two failed to make an improvement in the end, thus had to settle for
second on the grid.
After the qualifying session, the youngest triple world champion said, “I think I lost a little bit of time [in the middle sector] and should have been more aggressive. That doesn't mean I didn't push but maybe I should have pushed a little bit harder, a
little bit extra to get some more time.”
He added, “I think Lewis did a good job and put a strong lap in ... Surely I would love to be a little bit faster and be on pole but still it puts us in a great place for tomorrow. I think we have a good car and good pace for the race.”
Since Mercedes were extremely quick in the first sector, it will be difficult for Vettel to overtake Hamilton in the opening stages of the race.
