Sebastian Vettel claims surprising victory in 2012 Singapore Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel has claimed a surprising victory in the 2012 Singapore Grand Prix after Lewis Hamilton of McLaren retired due to a gearbox problem.
Vettel dominated almost throughout the weekend as he set the best time in all the practice sessions and topped the timesheets in the first two qualifying sessions also. However, he failed to match the pace of Hamilton in the last qualifying session and could only secure third grid position for the night race.
Moreover, the British driver delivered a remarkable performance in the qualifying at Marina Bay Street Circuit and secured an impressive pole position for the race. Although, he successfully maintained his lead until his gearbox gave him away during 23rd lap which eventually caused his retirement and the defending champion was able to score his second win of the current season.
The veteran German driver was followed by Hamilton’s teammate, Jenson Button who also showed an incredible pace and secured second podium finish. Furthermore, Button stayed ahead of Fernando Alonso of Ferrari who managed to secure third podium finish and is still leading the drivers’ championship with 194 points.
The Spaniard remained ahead of Paul di Resta of Force India who performed quite convincingly and came fourth in the charts.
Nico Rosberg of Mercedes secured an inspiring fifth place finish after setting off from 10th grid slot. Besides, Rosberg was followed by Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus who stayed ahead of his teammate, Romain Grosjean.
Ferrari driver Felipe Massa came 8th after beginning from 13th grid position and was followed by Daniel Ricciardo of Toro Rosso.
Sergio Perez of Sauber secured 10th place finish and was followed by Mark Webber of Red Bull who faced 20-second time penalty as he illegally overtook Perez’s teammate, Kamui Kobayashi.
Timo Glock of Marussia could not score even a single point as he came 12th and remained ahead of Kobayashi. Additionally, the Japanese driver was followed by Nico Hulkenberg of Force India who stayed ahead of Heikki Kovalainen of Caterham.
Glock’s teammate, Charles Pic stood at 16th place in the timesheets and was followed by Pedro de la Rosa of HRT.  Over and above, Bruno Senna of Williams came 18th and stayed ahead of Vitaly Petrov of Caterham.
It will be important to mention that Michael Schumacher of Mercedes has been hit by a ten-place grid penalty for the next race as he smashed Jean-Eric Vergne from behind because his brakes failed to work, which caused the retirement of both the drivers.
