Sebastian Vettel defends Michael Schumacher after 2012 Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel has defended Michael Schumacher of Mercedes who has been immensely criticised after his collision with Bruno Senna of Williams in the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix held at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
The FIA has imposed a five-place grid penalty on the seven-time world champion for the next race which is to be held at Circuit de Monaco after he hit Senna’s car from behind in the Spanish GP.
Nonetheless, the defending champion has shown support for Schumacher and said that the crash should be classified as a race accident because such incidents happen due to huge differences in the pace of the cars on the straight line.
“In those situations we don’t have much time of course,” he said. “And you can get very great speed differences on the straights. I think it should be classified simply in the category of racing accidents. Unfortunately it happens.”
He added, “Of course you can always say what is what afterwards just as you can say that it always takes two to tango.”
On the other hand, the team principal of Red Bull said that the front wing of Vettel’s car was damaged due to the debris from the collapse as a result of which he had to face a drive-through penalty as he activated the DRS wing in the yellow-flag zone.
“For us, that manoeuvre of Michael’s cost us a lot,” he said.
Furthermore, the motorsport president of Mercedes, Norbert Haug expressed to the Sport1 of Germany that they have accepted the decision of the race stewards.
The record championship holder, Schumacher has only been able to score two points in the season so far and he is currently standing at 18th position in the drivers’ championship.
Even though, he showed some convincing performances in the qualifying of the first three races, however he could not convert his competitive grid position into a podium finish in either of the race.
Nevertheless, regardless of the ongoing difficulties, he has said that he is positively looking forward to perform well in the season ahead. Besides, he is feeling very hopeful that he will be able to stand on a podium again in the approaching races.
