Sebastian Vettel denies calling Lewis Hamilton stupid – Formula 1 news
Sebastian Vettel has denied calling Lewis Hamilton “stupid” over un-lapping incident at Hockenheim.
Vettel believes that Hamilton’s move to un-lap himself at the recently concluded German Grand prix was unnecessary but has retracted from calling the Brit “stupid.”
Hamilton had a punctured tyre during the German Grand, which caused him to drop down the order. When the Brit returned to the track he was lapped by Fernando Alonso and Vettel. The McLaren car had good pace during the race and Hamilton was able to un-lap
himself from Vettel and tried to un-lap from Alonso as well but the Spaniard kept him off.
Vettel has admitted that he does not consider the move to be illegal yet believes that it was not in the best spirits of the game. Vettel lost some time and possibly lost an opportunity to battle it out with Alonso for the win.
“If you look at the rules it is clear you are allowed to do that,” said Vettel in Hungary. “I said it was unnecessary. I was hunting Fernando, it was a couple of laps to the pit stop, and it didn't help me. It probably helped Jenson, but it is racing.”
He added that he is not complaining rather saying that it was an unnecessary from a racing point of view.
“If I say after the race that I thought it was unnecessary, and then it gets put and quoted that I said he is stupid, then it is quite disappointing because sometimes I have a mouth, I say a couple of words, you have ears, but it seems somehow in that process
mistakes happen,” he said.
Vettel had finished second in the race but a penalty for an illegal overtake over Hamilton’s teammate Jenson Button dropped the German down to fifth.
Vettel has now said that what is done is done and he is not at Hockenheim at the moment and he is now looking forward to the race at Budapest.
It will be interesting to see whether the two drivers show any signs of dissent against each other during the race weekend at Budapest or not.
