Sebastian Vettel dominates season opening race of 2011 Formula 1 season in Australia
The 2010 Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel began the 2011 Formula 1 season exactly from where he left and that is at the top of the podium in first place.
The German is at it again as he won the season opening race of the season in Australia by more than a 13-second gap over McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton who finished in 2nd place.
Vettel scored the pole position for the race after managing a pole in the qualifying session finishing 7 tenths faster than Lewis Hamilton’s second fastest time.
However, it was surprising to see that his teammate Mark Webber was nowhere near the reigning champion’s pace either as he scored the 3rd place on the grid during the qualifying session and finished the Australian GP in 5th place behind
Fernando Alonso who finished in 4th place after starting from 5th place on the grid.
Other than that, Vitaly Petrov and Sergio Perez who finished the race in 3rd and 7th places respectively after starting from 6th and 13th places on the grid gave the biggest shocker of the day. Jenson Button on
the other hand started from the 4th place but finished in a disappointing 6th place.
The season opening race was indeed an eye opener for all the teams on the grid especially for Mercedes GP as both of its drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg were unable to finish the race altogether. Both of the drivers retired out of the race and
were unable to secure a single point for their team even though they were optimistic about the season opening race until the qualifying session of the Australian Grand Prix.
Nevertheless, the 2011 Formula 1 season has just begun and the teams have learnt a lot about their new cars after the first race. They will now head to Malaysia after two weeks for the second race of the new season.
