Sebastian Vettel frustrated after the Friday practice run – Formula 1 news
Sebastian Vettel said that the Red Bull needs to be a lot quicker in the qualifiers to be competitive.
Vettel vented his frustration after a below par Friday practice run at Melbourne. In the first part of the practice the German was 11th quickest and only improved on it by one place in FP2.
Vettel was clearly upset over his performance and although the rain affected the day early on and Red Bull’s performance cannot be clearly measured but from the reaction of the two time world champion it was clear that he had some issues.
“This morning it wasn't very good, I wasn't happy at all in the car,” Vettel told reporters in Melbourne. “This afternoon I think it was a bit better. Obviously with the conditions it was difficult to get a lot of running. It was more or less the same for
all of us, but with the little time we had in the afternoon it was quite OK.”
“It's up to us to find the balance and understand the car a little bit more and learn a little bit more about the car in these conditions on this circuit,” he added.
The day was early on dominated by the McLaren’s both Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton showed good pace on a wet start. In FP2 Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher led the way, followed by Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg. It showed that nothing could be taken out.
The leader slot is still empty as the conditions did not allow any one team or driver to settle down.
The clear indication of who are the drivers at the front will be during the qualifiers. Vettel admitted that one bad day is not going to count much, but it is a way to move forward saying that “you can’t invent the when in one day.”
It will be interesting to see how Vettel fares in the RB8 tomorrow during the FP3 and the qualifiers. It will be vital for the German to come up with an improved performance if he wants to save his chances of a third world title in a row.
