Sebastian Vettel insists 2011 was as difficult as 2012 – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel has insisted that winning the 2011 Formula 1 world drivers’ championship title was as difficult as his victory in this year.
Vettel performed amazingly well during the last season and claimed 11 grands prix wins. Moreover, he tremendously wrapped up his championship title at the 15th race during the preceding season.
However, in this season the veteran German driver could not dominate as compared to the previous one because the Milton Keynes based team struggled with the design of RB8 due to the ban on double diffuser and some other changes in the rules by FIA.
Nevertheless, the chief technical officer of Red Bull, Adrian Newey successfully developed the most competent car towards the end of the season which helped the 25-year-old in winning his third consecutive championship title from his main competitor, Fernando
Alonso of Ferrari by just 3 points.
Regardless of dominating in the preceding season, the three-time world champion expressed that they had to work really hard to defend their title, in this year as well as in the previous one.
“I'm not bothered by the fact that people look back to last year and say it was easy, because it wasn't,” Vettel said. “And it wasn't straightforward - OK if you look at the results it was and the way we secured the championship was - but what I mean is
that it wasn't always straightforward. We didn't go to the track expecting to win, and of course there was only the chance not to win because everything was so good. We had to work very, very hard for our success last year.”
In addition, he said that he is feeling extremely happy that they have won their third successive world drivers’ and constructors’ championship. Furthermore, he admired the overall efforts which his team made throughout the year to ensure the reliable development
of their car and praised the performance of his teammate, Mark Webber who also scored points with impressive consistency.
At present, Red Bull are focussing on developing their next year’s car and it will be exciting to see how they show up in the coming season.
