There are reports that the new world champion of Formula One, Sebastian Vettel is a likely candidate for the ‘2011 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year’ award.
Laureus World Sports Awards are among most prestigious and highly reputed awards of the sports’ world and are held once every year. Since, its inaugural ceremony in 2000, staged in Monte Carlo, the awards have kept expanding and giving recognition to sportsmen
and sportswomen from around the world taking part in all different kinds of individual and team sports. Among the major categories lies the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year and the Team of the Year. Moreover, there are other categories
like Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year, Comeback of the Year and several more.
The Red Bull driver, Sebastian Vettel has not only bagged the first championship of his career this year rather has several other records to his name, that makes him a very special world championship. The driver, presently, 23 years old, holds the record
of being the youngest man in 60 years of Formula One to have bagged points, he is also the youngest to have won a pole position, the youngest to get a race win and now he finally stands the youngest driver to have bagged a World Championship.
Another very important thing that makes him such a special and celebrated world champion is the way the 2010 Formula One season has unfolded. The tug for the title this year had been the toughest ever seen in the sports’ history, letting all the top five
drivers equally eligible for the world title, till the second last race of the season. Moreover, all the other drivers he was competing with this season were far older than him in experience as well as in age, a fact that increased pressure and stress on the
driver immensely. However, fighting back all ills and odds, the German emerged as the last man standing after a very tough and brutal year-long battle.
Now, to win the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award, Vettel will compete with five other nominees from around the world, which will be officially announced in January. However, the selection process has already been initiated as many of the sports
have already ended their seasons ahead of December.
The Laureus Media Selection Panel chooses the nominees while the winner decided by the Laureus Academy comprising 46 top ranking sportsmen and women of all time. The selection panel includes world's best sports editors, writers and broadcasters.
The winner of the award will cherish in February at a dazzling televised award ceremony to be held in Abu Dhabi.
