Sebastian Vettel plays down affect of new Pirelli tyres after the Young Driver Test – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel has said that the new Pirelli tyres didn’t affect the performance of his car after his run in the Young Driver Test at Silverstone circuit.
After the unpleasant incidents of tyre explosion in the British Grand Prix, Pirelli came up with new rear tyres in the German GP and planned to introduce 2012-style structure and 2013 compounds from the Hungarian GP onwards for
which they conducted the three-day YDT so as to ensure drivers’ safety.
Many drivers reported same performance on the new tyres in the long-run after the test. However, few drivers stated that the top pace has been reduced as compared to the previous tyre compound.
In contrast, Vettel has expressed that he sees no big difference in the performance of his car with new tyres after the test. In addition, he said that although the temperature was quite high on track, they managed to gather the
necessary information about their car’s update which will surely help them in making the essential development for the forthcoming races.
“Not that much of a difference,” Vettel said. “First of all we had three days with different drivers in all the different cars and no failures in conditions that were probably worse than at the grand prix. It was even hotter, the
asphalt temperature was even higher but there was no big surprise.”
“Obviously we weren't allowed to rebalance the car and try different things so refuelling was probably the biggest change but it was good to get a couple of laps and practice the feeling of driving around Silverstone,” he said.
Besides, he stated that he cannot make any predictions about their performance in the approaching races. Nevertheless, he asserted that he is confidently looking forward to perform well in the season ahead.
“I think it would be a stupid fight if I started commenting too much,” he added.
Currently, the German driver is leading the drivers’ championship with a strong lead over his main rivals, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus. Let’s see how he performs at Hungaroring on July 28, 2013.
