Sebastian Vettel receives the 'International Racing Driver of the Year' award
Another award came Sebastian Vettel’s way as the very extravagant and glamorous ceremony of the ‘2010 Autosport Awards’ unwrapped last night in London. The German embraced the 'International Racing Driver of the Year' nominated
by the jury, while decided by the votes of the fans.
The ‘Autosport Awards’ are just as big an event for Formula One, as is Oscar for showbiz. Being held for more than three decades now, it has added to the grace of the auto sport world, by recognising the talent and hard work of the stars of various racing
series held all across the globe.
Vettel, after having won the season decider, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last month, became the youngest Formula One World Champion in the sport’s history. Moreover, the 23-year-old also holds the record of being the youngest driver in Formula One to have earned
points. He also holds the record of being the youngest to take a pole position, the youngest to have won a race and now the youngest to have won a championship.
While talking to the media after embracing yet another award the jubilant driver said, "It's been a tiring month, but a very exciting one too. The wheels haven't stopped turning yet. Yesterday we had a very special night with the guys from the team in London,
which was very special because I've been around the planet since the one night we had in Abu Dhabi.”
Celebrations continued all through the night at the Red Bull headquarters after getting a double treat as the other very special award, the ‘Racing Car of the Year' also came to their share. The team’s RB6 had been evidently the fastest on the track all
through the season. On many of the occasions the other rival teams, like Ferrari and McLaren, despite of their great pace were simply not able to chase the Austrian package.
While recalling the events of the season, the new champion declared, "It's been a long, hard season and we made hard work of it at some times. On the morning of the Abu Dhabi race, we thought 'this is going to be difficult,' but the race was like a game
of poker in which we ended up with a royal flush."
The Austrian squad has been successful in bagging both the Constructors' as well as the Drivers' Championship of 2010, only after the sixth season of the team in the sport. The Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, believes that the season came as
a blessing for the team and he hopes to see many similar ones in the future.
