Sebastian Vettel says McLaren was out of reach at 2012 Australian GP qualifiers – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel has said that ‘McLaren was out of reach’ during the qualifying for the 2012 Australian Grand Prix held at Albert Park, Melbourne in which Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button have secured one-two for the season opener.
All the teams have shown their real pace on track during the qualifying before the first GP and the results can help in fair assessment of the standings of the teams for the approaching champion however, the actual results can only be seen after the season
opener.
The qualifying proved out to be quite startling for Red Bull as both the team drivers could not be able to secure any pole position for the first race. Vettel and his teammate, Mark Webber ended at fifth and sixth following Michael Schumacher of Mercedes.
Moreover, the impressive youngster, Romain Grosjean of Lotus gave a surprise by setting the third fastest time of 1 minute and 25.302 seconds.
Moreover, Vettel admitted that he made a mistake due to which he could not start higher up the grid but meanwhile he said that McLaren was too fast for them to catch-up during the qualifying.
“Qualifying was more or less as we expected; the cars being close to each other and I think Q1 to Q3 the order always changed slightly,” Vettel said. “I wasn't entirely happy with my final attempt; I did a mistake at the beginning of the lap so I should
have been higher up. But I think McLaren was out of reach today so congratulations, they were really quick.”
Furthermore, he said that they were not that far away but they could have performed better. He also said that they had still some work to do for the season ahead.
“No. As I said I did a mistake so I should have been a bit quicker. Regarding the car I think we are not miles away so it's not a disaster,” said Vettel.
In addition, after the qualifying, he said that he was very much surprised with the pace of Lotus and Mercedes which were ahead of the defending champions.
