Sebastian Vettel says double DRS zone at Canadian Grand Prix made overtaking easy – Formula 1 news
Red Bull’s Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel has voiced against the double Drag Reduction System zone which was used in the recently held 2011 Canadian Grand Prix.
Vettel added that the double DRS zone made overtaking too easy in the race. He added that already the wing is against the one who is leading the race, which is very much, himself all the time.
The German driver though did not lose his first place to McLaren’s Jenson Button in the last lap of the race, but due to the pressure of the DRS zone which was approaching.
Talking about the last lap battle, the defending champion said, “I obviously had to push very hard to stay ahead and I tried very hard to keep the gap for the back straight. Because the thing is that once Jenson was close in the DRS zone then it would have
been just too easy to overtake.”
He further added that, “If you are right behind and you open the wing then the other guy has no chance to defend, which is surely not the idea. But we are playing around and it is a new system. We are still early in the season and everybody is still learning
with it.”
The German led for 69 laps of the four-hour rain interrupted race in Canada but in the very last lap, he lost his cool when he saw Button roaring behind him.
Button was close enough to Vettel to use the DRS and make his way past the German. Vettel tried to open up the gap little bit and in the process just kissed the wet part of turn six and went wide off the track thereby giving away his position to Button.
However, the German should not be too disappointed as his lead in the drivers’ championship table was extended despite losing the race. The German leads the battle with 161 points on the table.
The next race will be contested in Valencia on June 26, 2011.
