Sebastian Vettel says he made a mistake in final few laps of Canadian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel has said that he would have won the Canadian Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season had he not been too conservative in the final few laps of the race.
Vettel added that he did not drive the car to the limit and did not try to open up the gap to the frontrunners for which he paid the price when pressure was exerted from Jenson Button in the final lap.
Sebastian Vettel was well on course to win his sixth grand prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season but was unable to do it in the rain-interrupted Canadian Grand Prix.
The German was disappointed about the race and explained, “I was trying to hold the gap to the cars behind and then I saw Jenson coming through, I was pushing and I think it would have been enough until the end but obviously it was not because I made a mistake.”
He further added that he was on the wet side of the track due to which he suffered from tyre grip and locked up his rear tyres.
The German added that after being so close to winning and then giving it away is not a good feeling but still his race was not a complete disaster.
He added, “I think it was a good day today. It was a difficult race, easy to do mistake and we've seen a lot of cars not finishing so it's good points. If you have got it in your hands and then you give it away it's not the sweetest feeling but, all in all,
it was a good for us here.”
Still the German has a healthy lead over other drivers in the championship standings and luckily for him, his closest competitor, Lewis Hamilton wasted his opportunity in the race and is down to fourth in the standings.
Vettel extends his lead towards the championship and now Jenson Button is following him with a deficit of 60 points.
The next race is two weeks away in Valencia on June 26, 2011.
