Sebastian Vettel says he respects Fernando Alonso – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel has said that he respects Fernando Alonso of Ferrari who has fought with him for the championship title, until the end of the 2012 Formula 1 season.
The Milton Keynes based team struggled with the design of their car during the opening few grands prix of this season because of the changes in rules and regulations by FIA and the ban on the double diffuser exhaust layout which was their main strength in
the previous season.
On the other hand, the Scarlet team also faced immense difficulties during the pre-season testing programme and they could not develop a car which would be competent enough to challenge the major opponents. Nevertheless, Alonso performed incredibly well
right from the start of the season even with the incompetent car and stood amongst the most consistent point scorers in the championship.
Moreover, the two-time world champion had led the championship for quite a long time in this season, but his unfortunate retirements in a couple of races created difficulties for him and in the end he lost the fight to the veteran German driver by only three
points.
Vettel has admitted that the Spaniard is one of the best drivers in the sport and he really respects him a lot. Furthermore, he admired the determination of the 31-year-old, with which he has fought for the title throughout the season.
In addition, he said that he is very pleased to win his third consecutive title and expressed his gratitude towards his team for making it possible for him.
“I respect him as a driver for the fact that he's fighting and he's one of the best drivers we have in Formula One,” Vettel said. “But obviously you look after yourself and we were fighting as well. I don't want to put it in perspective who was fighting
more or harder; that's not the point, it's a long season, there's a lot of races and in the end the guy who has the most points wins the championship. Of course I'm very happy that it was us and not him.”
