Sebastian Vettel says second pit-stop cost him British GP but Alonso was really fast – Formula 1
Red Bull’s Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel has stated that the second pit-stop was a bit slower but the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso was really fast in the Silverstone Grand Prix of the 2011 season.
The defending champion added that mistakes can happen with every team but to be fair, Ferrari of Alonso was very good on the day.
Vettel’s second pit-stop was not according to the plan when his crew took more time to change the rear tyres after which the German lost a track position to Alonso in the pits.
“I think everything went initially according to plan. It went on but I think it wasn't tight, we put the car down, back on the floor, when I saw in mirror and realised it was not done yet then they put car back up,” added the German.
This is not the first time that Vettel has been beaten in the 2011 season. Previously, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button took race victories from him in the Chinese and Montreal Grands Prix of the season.
However, for the first time Vettel thinks that he has been undone by pure pace of Ferrari.
He said, “I think it is hard to say how much we lost [in the pits], but we lost the lead and he had quite a bit of a cushion at that stage, so it didn't help. All in all mistakes here or there, but you cannot get it right all the time and I accept fair and
square Ferrari beat us today.”
Although Alonso took some advantage form Vettel’s delayed pit-stop still he admitted that Ferrari have some pace and Red Bull need to work hard against them.
Vettel also added that the Scarlet car was giving some resistance from the past few races and finally in Silverstone their developments paid off.
Nevertheless, 10 races remain in the ongoing 2011 season and Vettel has a healthy cushion in the drivers’ championship table of 80 points. The next grand prix of the season will take place in Germany in two weeks’ time on July 24, 2011.
