Sebastian Vettel says teammate Mark Webber deserved to win the Brazilian GP – Formula 1 news
Sebastian Vettel says his Red Bull teammate Mark Webber deserved to win the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Vettel suffered from a gearbox problem with his car, but still finished second. The German was leading from the start and had built a substantial lead, when his team informed him of the issue with his gearbox. He was advised to slow down and look after the
gearbox to avoid retirement.
It was then that Vettel conceded his lead to Webber on lap 29 turn one. Vettel later explained that he is not upset over the result and feels that it would be ludicrous to be upset over the outcome of the final race of the season, as it has been a fantastic
season for him throughout.
“Mark drove a fantastic race and deserved to win,” Vettel said. “I don't really like calling this bad luck, surely if something like this happens it's not in your hands, but I tried to do my best, tried to stay as close as I could and tried to keep the gap
to Fernando [Alonso] for most of the race.”
“Jenson [Button] at the end. I think we had a pretty amazing season and I think it would be over the top to be upset now,” he further added.
Vettel was ecstatic over Red Bulls constructors’ championship and his drivers’ championship title, and for ending the season placed one and two on the podium. He also said that now they are just looking forward to the time off and are going to recharge their
batteries to come back even stronger next year.
The German though did mention that it still is somewhat disappointing that he was not able to finish the race as a winner, as he had been able to gather substantial lead at the start, but because of the gearbox problem he had to slow down.
He turned down the engine and short shifted it which eventually got really worse during the course of the race and that lead to using high gears through most of the race. He dew comparison with Ayrton Senna’s race win in 1991 when the McLaren driver had
to hold the car in higher gears to record the first ever victory on home soil.
