Sebastian Vettel says that winning the championship was ‘breathless’ – Formula 1 news
Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel has stated that winning the F1 championship after having a long and tough season makes you feel breathless.
“In that moment everything just stops, you are simply breathless, because as we have already said many times, this year was incredibly long and difficult for all of us,” Vettel said. “Especially the last six races with those blocks of two races in a row
and only a week in between. I think that was a bit of a horror not only for us drivers, but also for the whole team, the engineers and mechanics, because it sucked whatever last bit of energy you might have had right out of you.”
The champion added that the moment you realise that you have won the title after driving for such a long and stressful season; when you see the chequered flag being waved after having race full of troubles, it is so mesmerising that you don’t even see anything.
He said that it takes some time for the feeling to sink in and then you finally understand what has been achieved.
In the beginning of the season, Red Bull’s car was not much competitive. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso kept leading the championship until the summer break. As the drivers were heading into the Belgian Grand Prix, there was a difference of forty points between
Alonso and Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber. However, Vettel finally started to catch up and won four consecutive races starting from the Singapore GP to the Indian GP. By then Vettel was in 13-point lead over Alonso.
However, the next race in Abu Dhabi brought a real challenge when Vettel was disqualified due to a fuel irregularity but secured a podium despite having to start from the pit lane. Alonso took the fight right until the final race where Vettel’s sixth finish
was enough for his title win although the Ferrari driver finished second. Alonso would have won the title if he had taken the first place.
Vettel has now become the youngest triple champion in the history of F1. He just needs two more titles in the next two years to become only the second man to win 5 consecutive titles after compatriot Michael Schumacher.
