Sebastian Vettel still wants victories despite his marginal 2011 championship lead – Formula 1 news
Current championship leader Sebastian Vettel has recently stated that he is still aiming for race wins and strong performances despite the fact that he has a marginal championship lead in the drivers’ standings which is enough to secure his title for this
year if he keeps finishing consistently.
“If you fail twice, and someone else has a few good races, then things can change. So we are going to keep on doing our maximum. Unless I have the title in the bag, I have nothing. You never know what is going to happen,” Vettel told the media.
Vettel is currently around 100 points ahead of his closest rivals and since he is the reigning world champion, this would be his second world champion if he secures it successfully.
There are just 7 races left in the 2011 Formula 1 season and the only way Vettel can lose the championship this year is if he retires out of at least 2 races. It is something which is less likely to happen since he is the most consistent driver of the 2011
Formula 1 season and has not retired out of a single race.
Even his teammate Mark Webber has not retired out of a single race this year but still since the reigning world champion finished off the podium on just 1 occasion up until now this year, his 2011 run has been extremely spectacular.
“Of course it's nice to have a head start so that maybe you feel a little safer, but still you cannot rest, you have to fight hard until the end,” he added.
Nevertheless, Red Bull Racing are looking extremely strong for the upcoming races as well but they are definitely not going to win them so easily since their car is reliant on high downforce and on tracks like Monza, they might not have a marginal advantage
over McLaren and Ferrari.
McLaren and Ferrari however, are clearly out of the championship as the only way they can win this title is to finish ahead of RBR at each race and expect them to retire at the same time as well which is not likely to happen.
