Sebastian Vettel storms again in Chinese FP2, McLaren’s duo still behind – Formula 1
The second Free Practice session is done and dusted in China and Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel still got the Better of McLaren’s duo, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. The German did a fastest lap time of 1 minute and 37.688 seconds.
Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber was down in the tenth place while still no information is given on the Kinetic Energy Recovery System in the Red Bull car.
Hamilton and Button did some good lap times on the soft compound of the Pirelli tyres in the modified version of the McLaren’s car, MP4-26. The new upgrades include redesigned front wing, floor and exhaust system. Both Brits were out to run some tests on
the new parts of the car and were successful. Button had a problem with his KERS system in the morning session but came out and did a good run in the second session of Practice.
Behind McLaren was the Mercedes duo, Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher, in fourth and fifth positions. Both Germans were on the same package as was used in the previous two tests and did some reasonable laps to familiarise themselves with the track, but
still they are a second slower than Red Bull and McLaren.
Ferrari’s Felipe Massa was down in sixth position and his teammate Fernando Alonso was down to 14th position. The movable rear wing of Alonso’s car once again malfunctioned after which he did the lap times without using it.
Renault’s duo, Nick Heidfeld and Vitaly Petrov, had a bad Free Practice session as it had in Sepang. This time, Nick Heidfeld’s car gave him some trouble which was interpreted by the team as the driver’s fault and not an issue with the car. Heidfeld was
off track twice but managed an eighth position while Petrov managed a ninth finish.
23 drivers participated in the FP2 as Force India’s Scot Paul di Resta was back into the pits after the first lap and his day was called off by the team after facing some major technical issues.
The final Free Practice session will be contested on Saturday before the Qualifiers.
