Sebastian Vettel struggling on medium tyres at 2012 Malaysian GP – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel has said that he decided to run the car on hard compound only because he struggled on the medium one and there was no tactic behind it, during the qualifying at 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix held at Sepang International
Circuit on Saturday.
Vettel finished at sixth place in the qualifying with his best time of 1 minute and 36.634 seconds and under the rules he would start the race on hard tyres on which he set his time conversely, the other top ten contenders were using the medium compound.
Nonetheless, double world champion, Vettel refused that he planned for the race when he went with the idea of hard tyres while he admitted that he was finding difficulties on medium compound.
“There's not much strategy behind it to be honest,” he said. “I was struggling with the soft[er] tyres and thought I had a better car on the hard tyres, which is why I made the call. We could have gone maybe a tenth or two quicker on the soft tyre but then
we went significantly faster on the hard tyre. Whether that is an advantage tomorrow ... we are the only ones [in the top ten on hard tyres] so we hope it might be, but we'll see.”
Regardless of facing issues in the car RB8 due to upgrades on the last day of the final test held at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, in which Vettel could only complete 23 laps and was last on the timesheets, he had still been viewed as the out-and-out
favourite for the championship title.
Furthermore, Vettel said that they had not been able to perform well during the qualifying of both the season opener at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia last Saturday and the second GP.
Nevertheless, he said that they were expecting a good performance at the second race.
Moreover, he said that they still had a lot of work to do in order to make the essential improvements and the necessary preparations for the races ahead while he said that it was crucial to enhance the pace.
