Sebastian Vettel targets a repetition of the 2007 championship
Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel said that he is taking inspiration from Kimi Raikkonen’s unlikely title win in the 2007 Formula 1 season as he targets a repeat of that performance this year.
Vettel is just 14 points behind his teammate, who is the championship leader Mark Webber in the drivers’ standings. According to the current result, Sebastian Vettel is 3 points better than Raikkonen was at the same stage and the German believes that there
is no reason why he cannot pull of the same performance.
“What happened in 2007 happened for a reason and Kimi [Raikkonen] had quite a bad chance of winning the championship being 17 points behind, so of course he showed it is possible. He did his maximum, he won those races but it also required the others to
not finish in the points or not high up so you cannot compare,” said Vettel during Thursday's press conference.
With just three races to go in this season, the top 5 are still in the run for the title and one can say that it is anyone’s game at the moment. The standings have been changing vitally since the past 2 to 4 races and the Korean Grand Prix will have a similar
impact on the title as well.
“I think it is normal to have ups and downs, sometimes more and sometimes less, but the expectation was to be in a position to fight for the championship and we are in a strong and good position, so far we have fulfilled our expectations,” he added.
Teammate Mark Webber is currently leading the championship and it seems that he can almost feel the title in his hands but believes that it is still too early to start thinking about championship glory despite his marginal lead. He thinks that it is ridiculous
calculating points and stuff in Formula 1. F1 is an unpredictable sport and anything can happen at any time.
“In terms of doing well, this is another event, another race here. I will keep doing what I am doing. The gap has been edging the right way in the last races, and I need to keep doing that. I just need to keep doing my best, and if I do the best the result
will take care of itself,” said the championship leader.
However, this determination is a good sign from Sebastian Vettel’s side for his team and the team will definitely move to the Korean Grand Prix with motivation at its peak.
