Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel thinks that the qualifying of the 2012 Japanese Grand Prix are going to be very crucial and is expecting a very close tussle amongst the contenders on Saturday.
Vettel struggled during the first free Friday practice session at Suzuka and came 17th in the timesheets. Nevertheless, he improved his pace in the second session and set the 3rd best time.
The veteran German driver said that he didn’t feel comfortable with his car during FP1 but he was contended with the team’s progress in the afternoon. Moreover, he said that he felt happy with both the soft and hard Pirelli compound tyres.
In addition, he said that he is expecting a very difficult qualifying session and insisted that they must make some significant improvements in their pace so as to come up stronger tomorrow.
“I think overall we had a good day,” Vettel said. “This morning the car was very nervous and I think we lost out a little bit compared to others but this afternoon seemed to be a bit better, I was a lot happier and both compounds seem to perform reasonably
well. Looking forward to tomorrow I think it will be extremely close so we need to make sure that we do another step overnight.”
“We need to make sure we get our maximum. Days like today we were able to improve ourselves which is most important and we need to make sure,” he added.
The two-time world champion has not dominated in this year as compared to the last one in which he won 11 races. Nonetheless, he is still considered as one of the most competent title contenders in this year’s championship fight and is presently at second
place in the drivers’ standings ahead of Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus.
Even though, the current leader in the drivers’ rankings, Fernando Alonso has a strong lead over the defending champion, nevertheless, he is confidently looking forward to perform well in the remainder of the season so as to defend his championship title.
It will be thrilling to see how he performs in the forthcoming races.
