Sebastian Vettel to stay with Red Bull and far away from Ferrari – Formula 1 news
Youngest Formula 1 champion and Red Bull’s driver, Sebastian Vettel, has extended his contract with Red Bull, keeping him with the side until the 2014 season.
Red Bull’s advisor, Helmut Marko, confirmed the reports and said that the champion was due for a contract renewal from Red Bull which Vettel agreed to.
Vettel’s contract with Red Bull was due to expire at the end of 2011 season with a clause binding him for 2012 if he finishes in the first three spots this season.
But now the Red Bull team have strengthened their ownership on the champion driver, Vettel, by 2014. It is said that an amount of 12 million Euros per year is offered to Vettel, but Marko refused to give the exact details of the contract.
“It was in mutual agreement that we extended Sebastian's contract to 2014. Both sides wanted to continue the partnership, so it was no big issue,” Marko explained.
On the other hand, Vettel has said on various occasions that he wants to drive for Ferrari one day. Both Red Bull and Ferrari officials took the champion’s comment lightly and said that it is his right to dream.
However, Vettel said that he will even pay Fernando Alonso or Felipe Massa to take a year off trip so that he can drive the famous Ferrari car. But now as the contract is extended until 2014, Vettel will have to wait just a little bit longer to get his hands
on the Scarlet car.
Vettel became the youngest Formula 1 champion in 2010 driving for Red Bull when he took the title in the very last grand prix in Abu Dhabi.
He, along With Mark Webber, made Red Bull the constructors’ champions for the first time as well. Marko has said that on various occasions that Red Bull will never let Vettel go just after two years and said that he will have to wait ten years to go to Ferrari.
Mark Webber’s career in Formula 1 is also uncertain after 2011 so Red Bull have done well to keep at least Vettel as a lead driver for the upcoming championships.
