Sebastian Vettel tops FP2 of 2011 Singapore Grand Prix at Marina Bay Street Circuit – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel secured the top position in the second free practice session of the Singapore Grand Prix held Friday, September 23, 2011 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
The Formula 1 reigning champion, Vettel set his pace at 1 minute and 46.374 seconds by beating Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso - his closest competitor. Alonso was just 0.20 seconds behind the German.
All the teams participated in the evening session of FP2 at Marina Bay using a set of soft and supersoft tyres from Pirelli.
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, who is currently at the fifth position on the drivers’ championship was the third fastest. The 30-year-old driver from Great Britain was 0.471 seconds off the pace of Vettel.
The Brit was closely followed by Felipe Massa of Ferrari with a gap of just 0.005 seconds.
Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing team secured a fourth place at the end of FP2. The Australian who ran for 28 laps was 0.871 seconds off the pace of Vettel.
The sixth position was taken by Michael Schumacher of Mercedes-Benz who drove his MGP-W02. However, his teammate Nico Rosberg was unable to finish in the top ten slots and ended up at 15th.
Adrian Sutil of Force India and Sergio Perez of Sauber managed to secure seventh and eight positions respectively.
Perez was joined by Japanese teammate from Sauber, Kamui Kobayashi who was 9th at 1 minute and 49.730 seconds.
What turned out to be an exciting session for many was more of a frustrating event for Jensen Button of McLaren who ended up at 10th position.
Both the Toro Rosso drivers, Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastian Buemi retired early during the FP2.
There were some issues faced with regards to kerbs in the first practice session which were taken care of during the second FP session. Also, the FP1 was delayed due to some problems at the circuits which meant the teams had to compensate for the time lost
in the second session.
Let’s see how the teams perform during the third practice session that is scheduled for Saturday, 24 September, 2011.
