Sebastian Vettel voted as European Sportsman of the Year – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel, who won his third consecutive world drivers’ championship title in the 2012 Formula 1 season, has been voted as the European Sportsman of the Year.
Vettel performed tremendously well in this season and fought impressive until the very end of the season.
Although, the Milton Keynes based squad faced immense problems with their car design during the start of the season because of the changes in the rules by FIA and especially the ban on double diffuser.
Nevertheless, they came back very well as their chief technical officer, Adrian Newey successfully managed to develop the most competent car towards the end of the year with which the 25-year-old almost became unbeatable and claimed his third successive
world championship title.
It will be important to mention that Vettel had a very tough competition with Fernando Alonso of Ferrari who also performed remarkably well. Nonetheless, he won the championship battle by just 3 points from the Spaniard and became the youngest triple world
champion in the history of F1.
The veteran German has been voted as best by the journalists from 26 news agencies and won the poll with 137 points from his main opponent, Bradley Wiggins who is the first ever British to win Tour de France. Furthermore, Wiggins was just 7 points behind
the veteran German driver.
Besides, the winner of 5000m and 10000m at the 2012 London Olympics, Mohammed Farah came third in the poll with 126 points.
In addition, the poll was organised by PAP which is a polish news agency. PAP stated on their website that the winner has been selected from 73 athletes from 28 countries, belonging to 31 disciplines. Moreover, there were 47 male athletes and 26 female athletes.
The three-time world champion has emerged as one of the most talented athletes and has definitely proved his potential as a great sportsman. Now, he has been compared with the seven-time world champion, Michael Schumacher who is undoubtedly a living legend.
Let’s see how he performs in the coming year and whether he will be able to carry on his winning streak or not.
