Sebastian Vettel- the 2010 ESPNF1's driver of the year
The celebrations and jubilations for the new world champion, Sebastian Vettel are far from over. After having embraced several records and awards all through the season, the driver has now been voted ‘ESPNF1's driver of the year’.
He has been selected from among a group of drivers who were successful at showing some remarkable performances all through the 2010 season. The selection of nominees and ultimately the decision of the winner was made by a panel of experts of motor racing
world and included legendary names such as, Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jackie Stewart.
Although Vettel has been able to shine since his debut year in the sport but the last two seasons with Red Bull brought the driver right in the centre of the limelight. The driver previously drove for two years with Toro Rosso, the junior team owned by the
Austrian beverage company, Red Bull and was later, in 2009, signed by the senior team and now the constructors’ champion, Red Bull Racing. In his brief career of three years with the sport, he has met immense success and holds several records.
The German driver stands tall as the youngest man in 60 years’ of the sports’ history to have scored such points. He is also the youngest one to have gained a podium and a pole and finally a race win. Now, after winning the last race of the 2010 season,
the Abu Dhabi GP he stands tall as the youngest world champion ever in Formula One, a record that was previously held by the McLaren driver, Lewis Hamilton.
With a remarkable ten pole positions and five race wins this year, Vettel certainly stands as the favourite driver for everybody involved with the sport. Many iconic names in F1 such as, Moss, Stewart, Sir Frank Williams, Gerard Lopez, Tonio Liuzzi, Sam
Bird and several others from the editorial staff, together declared that the 23-year-old is their choice for the 2010 season.
While expressing his excitement, Vettel proclaimed, "Thank you for this award! The whole year was such a unique experience, there were some great moments, which I will never forget, but there were also some difficult times too. I am very proud of what our
team achieved. We will soon be facing new challenges and the aim for next year is to defend both titles. There is a lot to do, but for now - I would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and see you next year!"
