Sebastian Vettel wins Barcelona Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Defending Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel continued his dominance in 2011 season by winning his 4th race of the season.
The win in Barcelona made it four out of five for Vettel this season. Considering the margins of victory for Vettel in past races of the season, this one was a much more difficult task for the German.
Vettel firstly did not start from pole in this race and had to fight off Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton for the win in the end. Lewis Hamilton gave Vettel a real run for his money in the final stages of the race.
The Barcelona Grand Prix is normally known as a boring part of the Formula 1 calendar and given its track dynamics many used to call it a snooze fest. It was anything but that this weekend, and thanks to the latest developments and innovations in the sport
this season there was plenty of action and no shortage of overtaking on the circuit.
The pole position changed hand multiple times in the race and until the very end it was not certain as to who was going to win the race. As the race started, Fernando Alonso surprised one and all with a blistering start from the starting grid and the Spaniard
boosted maybe by the home circuit moved into pole position from his starting spot of 4th on the grid.
Red Bull were taken by surprise but they knew that in the long run they will catch up. The new tyres this season are also something all teams are coming to terms with and unfortunately, Ferrari got that wrong. As Alonso pitted to get his tyres changed after
18 laps, he lost pole to Sebastian Vettel who kept it until the end.
Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button of McLaren showed excellent control on the track with the harder tyres, and credit must go to the team think tank who decided to go in with harder tyres to avoid making more pit stops.
Hamilton managed to finish 2nd just fractions behind Vettel, while Jenson Button moved up to 3rd to take the final podium spot. Mark Webber the other Red Bull driver who started from pole managed to end up on 4th place
while Fernando Alonso of Ferrari ended up on 5th after leading the race for first 18 laps.
The win now gives Sebastian Vettel a 41-point lead over Lewis Hamilton in the driver standings, with 17 more races to go in the season. Red Bull has looked like the team to beat in first five races of the season, and so far, McLaren are the only team threatening
to close the gap on the Austrian team. While Ferrari has fallen behind despite their best efforts they just cannot seem to get the upgrades and their strategies right.
