Sebastian Vettel wins Brazilian Grand Prix
Sebastian Vettel won the Brazilian Grand Prix to keep his Formula One championship hopes alive.
The Red Bull driver overtook shock pole-sitter Nico Hulkenberg in turn one, and very soon Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber found a way past to finish second.
Championship leader Fernando Alonso was unable to challenge for the race win, and he had to settle for third place, and having been 11 points clear of Webber before the race, he is now eight points off the Ferrari driver, while Vettel is 15 points behind.
Red Bull dominated the race, and with their one-two finish today they sealed the constructors’ title.
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton is now effectively out of the championship hunt, as he finished fourth and is now 24 points behind Alonso.
A delighted Vettel said he still has a good chance to win his first world championship. “I think so” he said. “I don't wish anything bad for him [Alonso] but I wouldn't be sad to see some Ferrari smoke.
“We're still fighting for the drivers' championship but obviously we want to get rid of this guy,” added Vettel.
With one race remaining, Alonso is still in control, but he expects a tough weekend coming up. “I need second place if Mark wins to be champion, a fifth if Seb wins so we see what happens,” said Alonso. “It is going to be a stressful weekend for all of us, but this is Formula One and anything can happen next weekend. We all start from zero and we'll see who does a better job in seven days' time.”
This thrilling season will head into Abu Dhabi next weekend with the Red Bulls putting the pressure on Alonso after their victory today.
