Sebastien Bassong hints at Tottenham Hotspur exit, Michael Essien’s future safe at Chelsea

Sebastien Bassong close to White Hart Lane exit
Sebastien Bassong, the 24-year-old Cameroon defender, revealed he was considering leaving English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur because of lack of first team football. Bassong has only made 14 starts this season for the London side and admitted he
was considering making a move in search for regular football.
Bassong said while speaking to reporters, “I admit I am disappointed. I was a regular last season but this season I have spent a lot of time on the bench. It hurts being constantly overlooked. If I'm not playing for Tottenham, then maybe I am not much use
to them. I want to stay but if you are not playing, you have to consider your options. It would be irresponsible not to.”
Bassong joined the Spurs in the summer of 2009 from Newcastle United for a fee of £8 million. The Cameroonian got off to a brilliant start, scoring on his debut against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 to help his side to a 2-1 win. This helped him earn a place in the starting
line-up at White Hart Lane and he went on to make 33 appearances that season in all competitions.
Since then, he has fallen out of favor with Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp, this season’s 17 appearances in all competitions more than proves it. The central defender is understandably frustrated with being left out, especially when the regular starters
were out injured or serving suspensions. While he is contracted to the Spurs until the 2014 season, he could very well leave in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Michael Essien staying at Stamford Bridge
Ghana midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Essien-c25294 has been in talks with the club over his future and has reportedly been assured by Bruce Buck, the club chairman, that he will not be facing a summer exit. The 28-year-old has been told that he is part of Chelsea’s future
plans and is not expected to leave any time soon.
English Premier League rivals Manchester City are among the many clubs eyeing Essien in hopes of luring the player away from the Blues. However, the player’s agent confirmed that the midfielder would be staying with the London side.
Essien’s agent said while speaking to reporters, “He has spoken to the [Chelsea] chairman. He will stay at Chelsea next season, the club want him to stay and he will be there for the next four seasons. Lots of clubs are interested in Michael but the answer
is the same – he is very happy at Chelsea.”
Despite being one of the top players in previous seasons for Chelsea, the Ghanaian has not been able to maintain his form. That has mostly been because of the injuries he suffered in the last two seasons while on international duty.
However, he has given a break to international football for now and is reportedly focusing on returning to form for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786. The holding midfielder arrived at Chelsea from Ligue 1 side Lyon in the 2005 season for a fee of £24.4 million.
