Sebastien Buemi: Drag Reduction System to make overtaking easier in Canadian Grand Prix – Formula 1
Red Bull Toro Rosso driver Sebastien Buemi has said that the Drag Reduction System is going to make overtaking easier at this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.
The DRS is a system which enables a driver to change the angle of his rear wing according to his own liking which means that a driver can increase or decrease downforce depending on each portion of the track.
During the races, there is a designated DRS zone which means that the drivers can use this device only in a certain portion of a track. However, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is going to be the first track to feature two DRS zones in the 2011 Formula 1 season
so far.
The first DRS zone is going to be the after the hairpin at Turn 10 where the drivers can use full downforce for maximum velocity while the second DRS zone is going to be the pit straight.
Buemi believes that the first DRS zone is going to be more effective for overtaking as compared to the second one.
“I think you'll pass more after the hairpin, because the back straight is so long. The DRS is going to work immediately, and with that 10-15kph extra, you're going to be able to pass easily, on the inside or the outside,” he said.
He added that the DRS has been working for the long straights better like in China and Turkey and since the back straight of the Canadian circuit is like that, it is going to be quite effective for overtaking.
“Up to 200kph, whether you have the DRS on or off, there really isn't much difference. It's only when you get up to 280-300kph and hold that speed for a long time that you get the big advantage,” said the Toro Rosso driver.
Nevertheless, the race strategies are going to be very important for each team and it is going to be interesting to see how each team uses the tyres in order to squeeze out as much performance from their respective cars as they can.
