Sebastien Buemi hopes to stay with Toro Rosso and prove himself with a better season in 2011
He is not on the official FIA entry list yet, but Toro Rosso claims that Sebastien Buemi is expected to keep his seat on the team for another season. Nevertheless, it is being speculated that Buemi may be in competition with Daniel
Ricciardo for his place in the team. Ricciardo, Toro Rosso’s third driver, has been appearing increasingly in test sessions for the past two years.
Toro Rosso were ninth in the 2010 constructors championship, scoring 13 points over the course of the season. Buemi outperformed teammate Jaime Alguersuari for most of the 2010 season, but did not do well in the final five races.
Buemi finished in 16th place while Alguersuari finished in 19th place in the drivers’ standings.
“I disappointed my team several teams when I was not aggressive enough or distracted, and there were some accidents,” said Buemi. “But 2010 is now checked off and I know that this season I will improve in.”
Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has said Alguersuari is “on the right path” while Buemi “struggled” in the last few races of the season.
“I make no excuses,” Buemi told the media. “At the most there are explanations, but this analysis stays inside the team. But I know why it happened and there is a lot to talk about with the mechanics and the engineers. And now
I have a new chief mechanic.
“It's not the solution but just one of the things I had to fix. I will also change my physiotherapist. My current trainer, an Italian, gave me too little mental support. Formula One is not just about fitness and driving and your
physio needs to do more than hold your helmet and drinks bottle.”
Buemi’s new trainer is Helmut Fink, a 45-year-old Austrian who formerly worked with Nick Heidfeld at BMW-Sauber.
“I’m not worried that I am slower than anybody and I have enough confidence in myself,” Buemi added. “You can never be certain. But since 2005, Red Bull have been giving me so much support and I hope to be part of the family for
a long time and one day race with Red Bull [Racing].”
