The Genoa custodian has revealed that before joining the Liguria club, he could have signed for the Ligue 1 leaders and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127 might have been his club as well
One of the most prominent faces in Italian football, Sebastien Frey has spent most of his career away from his native France. After impressing for Stade Malherbe de Caen as a teenager, the Frenchman was picked up by Internazionale before he spent brief stints
at Parma and then Fiorentina.
Now at Genoa since 2011, the Thonon-les-Bains native is in the final few years of his career which has seen him make just two appearances for the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 national side. And, one cannot blame Les Bleus managers for not giving Frey much of a chance in the France
jersey given the vast goalkeeping talent they have had at their disposal.
And, while talking to reporters regarding missed opportunities of playing in Ligue 1, Frey had a lot of revelations to make. In an interview with France Football, the 32-year-old revealed that he was indeed approached by Paris Saint-Germain in the summer
of 2011 when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Leonardo-c22056 was looking to sign a new goalkeeper.
In the end, it was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Salvatore-Sirigu-c32282 who arrived at Parc des Princes from Palermo. Frey says that there were a lot of reasons why he was unable to secure a move to PSG even though it was a very interesting challenge for him.
“It did not happen for essentially personal reasons. On a family plan, it was more convenient for me to stay in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926, although the challenge of PSG was interesting. It really pushed me further in my thinking. I was also put under pressure by Genoa’s interest.
They offered me a contract for five seasons at the age of 31.”
And thirteen years before his move to Liguria, Frey could have ended up playing for PSG’s bitter rivals, Olympique de Marseille. At that time, a young Frey was forced to be sold by Caen in order to help the club avoid bankruptcy. Naturally, the player was
going to be sold to the highest bidder which turned out to be Inter Milan.
“When I went to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 in 1998, I could also have been able to go to Marseille. OM wanted me to replace Andreas Kopke. But Inter offered more money. SM Caen would sell me to the highest bidder to avoid bankruptcy. So I went to Italy. It was better for everyone
even if OM really appealed me.”
Frey then added that if it was his choice, he would have joined Les Phoceens.
