Sebastien Zietz, Gavin Gillette and Michael February prevail in Round 2 at Coastal Edge ECSC
Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz, his fellow countryperson Gavin Gillette and South Africa’s Michael February successfully advanced to the third round (Round of 48) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Coastal Edge ECSC presented by Vans after
claiming top honours in their respective Round 2 (Round of 96) heats that went down at Virginia Beach in Virginia, America, on Friday, August 24.
America’s Victor Done, his compatriot Michael Powell and Australia’s Mitch Crews were able to stay alive in the contention for the event title as well following their second-place finish in their respective Round 2 heats.
The two-to-three foot waves breaking at the primary event site seemed perfect for an action-packed day, promising to treat the huge crowd to a series of exquisite performances as the surfing talent from around the globe took each other on in four-man battles
for survival.
Pitted against Done and his compatriots Andrew Doheny and Derek Peters during the 13th heat, Zietz put on an impressive performance to claim the win. The Hawaiian surfer posted a 7.17 off his first business-wave early in the heat and went on to
add an additional 8.07-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 15.24 points.
Done accompanied him into the next round of the competition after registering a heat-total of 11.94 points, while both Doheny and Peters ended up settling for bottom-two place after finishing with a heat-total of 11.30 and 10.00 points respectively.
The 14th heat saw February get the better of Crews, Hawaii’s Alex Smith and America’s Cory Lopez in a four-man battle for the Round 3 spot. The South African surfer got down to business right away, earning a 6.73 off his first business-wave and
backed it up with a 7.27-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 14.00 points.
Crews successfully survived the heat as well after registering a heat-total of 11.80 points, while both Smith and Lopez got eliminated from the competition after registering a heat-total of 11.07 and 11.00 points respectively.
The 15th heat saw Gillette get the better of Powell, Brazil’s Yuri Sodre and Australia’s Leigh Sedley to advance to the next round.
The Hawaiian surfer opened his account with a 5.50-point ride and added an additional 7.60 points to his account to finish with a decisive heat-total of 13.10 points.
Powell was able to extend his life in the competition as well after securing runner-up place through a heat-total of 12.70 points. Sodre and Sedley were unable to make the Round 3 cut following their bottom-two finish after registering a heat-total of 7.40
and 6.80 points respectively.
