Sebastien Zietz and Dane Reynolds prevail in Round 2 at Billabong Pipe Masters
Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz and America’s Dane Reynolds made their way through into the third round at the Billabong Pipe Masters after claiming top honours in their respective Round 2 heats that went down at Banzai Pipeline in Oahu, Hawaii, on Sunday, December
9, 2012.
Zietz got the better of South Africa’s Travis Logie in the sixth heat to secure his place in the next round, while removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
Australia’s Kai Otton failed to hold his own against Reynolds in the seventh heat, consequently getting eliminated while sending the latter through into the next round.
It turned out to be an ideal day for surfing at Banzai Pipeline, with pumping six-to-eight foot waves gracing the main event site tempting the surfers to express themselves freely with bold tricks.
With the event serving as the tenth and final stop on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour and final jewel on the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, every single minute of the on-going action
at the Pipeline was nothing short of enthralling.
The sixth heat pitted Zietz against Logie in a one-on-one battle for survival.
As the battle got underway, the 24-year-old local talent got off to a promising start and hardly wasted any time to post an impressive 8.33 on the score-board.
He went on to add an additional 4.40 points to his account, thus getting to a two-wave total of 12.73 points.
Logie responded with a 6.50 and 5.67-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 12.17 points. The inadequate score resulted in his defeat and thus elimination from the competition.
The seventh heat saw Reynolds and Otton take each other on for a place in the third round.
The immensely experienced American surfer asserted his dominance in the heat right from the word go with a near-perfect 9.50-point ride, which he later backed with a 7.50-point wave to register a heat-total of 17.00 points.
Otton tried to put up a fight, but was only able to get to a heat-total of 13.26 points, which comprised of a 7.93 and 5.33-point wave. As a result, he was forced to surrender victory to his rival.
