Sebastien Zietz and Fredrick Patacchia claim victory in Reef Hawaiian Pro quarter-finals
Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz and fellow countryperson Fredrick Patacchia clinched victory in their respective quarter-finals that went down at the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii on Saturday, November 24, 2012.
Both the local surfers consequently advanced through into the semi-finals following their quarter-final success.
Hawaii’s Sunny Garcia and America’s Kolohe Andino also made their way through into the next stage of the competition after securing runner-up positions in their respective heats.
The coveted prize money along with the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ranking points on offer at the latest ASP Prime event served to raise the intensity of the level of competition, pushing the surfers to deliver exquisite performances while
pursuing top honours.
After a series of impressive performances, Zietz made his way through into the first quarter-final, which pitted him against Garcia, France’s Jeremy Flores and America’s Brett Simpson in a four-man battle for the semi-final spot.
As the battle got underway, the Hawaiian surfer got off to a solid start, making his comfort in the waves apparent. Locking his first business-wave, Zietz posted an 8.33 on the score-board and went on to back it up with a 6.57-point wave, thus finishing
with a heat-total of 14.90 points.
Garcia, also familiar with the local conditions, got his hands on a 7.60 and 5.50-point ride, thus registering a heat-total of 13.10 points. The score proved sufficient to take him through into the next round.
Flores and Simpson finished with a heat-total of 12.87 and 12.50 points respectively, which resulted in their elimination from the competition.
The second quarter-final saw Patacchia make his way through into the next stage of the competition after claiming victory over Andino, his compatriot Cory Lopez and Australia’s Matt Wilkinson.
The Hawaiian surfer locked his first business-wave to earn a 7.00 off it and went on to back it up with a 4.17-point ride, thus reaching a heat-total of 11.17 points. The score kept him in the lead until the end to see him through into the semi-finals.
Andino accompanied the winner into the semi-finals after securing runner-up place through a heat-total of 11.16 points, which included a couple of scores in the five-point range.
Wilkinson finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.07 points, while Lopez had to settle for bottom position after registering a heat-total of 6.20 points. This resulted in their elimination from the competition.
